Chhun Bunthon Receives Encouragement from Cambodian Human Rights Committee

PHNOM PENH: Chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, Keo Remy, met with Chhun Bunthon, a gold medalist in the men's 800m, on May 16, 2023 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium during the 32nd SEA Games, hosted by Cambodia.

In the meeting, Chairman Remy instructed Bunthon to work hard to train and maintain a dignified character so as to be a role model for the next generation to compete as Olympic athletes. Bunthon won a gold medal in the 800-meter sprint in just under 1:53 seconds, the first time Cambodia has taken the gold in the race.

The chairman then provided six million riels (about $1500 USD) to Chhun Bunthon, to encourage further training efforts. The athlete responded with humility at the unexpected honor, saying that he is determined to improve through his training and will continue in his endeavors.

President of the Khmer Volunteer Athletics Federation, Duong Meas Chamroeun, remarked that he is very proud of his country’s track and field gold medal. He thanked Keo Remy and the Human Rights Committee for taking care of the athletes and for allowing the Khmer Volunteer Athletics Federation to convene.
